The Treatment of Down Syndrome

The main goal when treating a person with Down syndrome is to manage their medical condition and control the symptoms of the condition, since there is no cure. Some of the common treatments are medications, screenings, regular checkups and surgery. Individuals with Down syndrome can also benefit from attending regular support and counseling groups in order to cope with many of the common emotional aspects of this condition.

There are times an individual with Down syndrome need surgery for common conditions that may occur, such as congenital heart disease. Counseling can also be beneficial and is not limited to just those with this condition. Family members of those with Down syndrome can learn important information from individuals with the highest paying jobs such as nurses, doctors, and other health care professionals in order to get questions answered and options in treatment.

The checkups and regular screening for those with Down syndrome are a necessity. This is because these individuals have health risks that include a host of serious conditions. These conditions include: thyroid problems, leukemia and other cancers, congenital heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, eye problems, joint/nerve/bone/ muscle problems and more.

The risks and medical conditions that can come about with this chromosomal condition give those with Down syndrome an increased risk of premature death. It is also important to catch a problem before the symptoms occur, which is why it is essential that physicians schedule regular screenings. These screenings can indicate if there are changes in the condition of the vision or with hearing and can also recognize the presence of infections or cancer

Business and Health Care

The leadership of a hospital, doctor’s office or other health care facility must enforce certain procedures to make sure that the business stays financially viable. The facility must be run as a business so that supplies, equipment and overhead costs can be met without worry and without struggling to make payments on time. This management team is referred to as the health care revenue cycle management and helps to make sure that all accounts receivable are paid in full and on time.

These staff members use specific techniques to issue bills, review each patient’s individual financial situation and process money from insurance companies and private payments. Many larger health care organizations stay on top of finances by keeping close track of transactions and analyzing reports at the end of every quarter. Without these tools, many health institutions are forced to close their doors or file for bankruptcy.

There are several problems that physicians and staff members encounter that makes it difficult to stay financially viable. Some patients present with complicated and expensive medical problems that must be treated, but may not have the health insurance or the means to pay for their care. A struggle exists between the moral conflict of physicians who administer treatment to these individuals and the management side of the facility who is more concerned with the financial aspect of how many dollars’ worth of supplies and time will be used. Finding the balance between an excellent standard of medical care and a professional billing practice is the only way hospitals and doctors can remain in business and continue to offer treatment to patients who need their services.

Eating To Help Grow Thick, Healthy Hair

People can tell the type of foods that we eat based on how our hair and skin look. Remember that old cliché that states we are what we eat? Well, technically it’s true. We always see on the news that if we want healthy skin and hair than we have to change our diet to eat healthier. It’s true because if we all want that thick, healthy hair, we need to have good nutrition.

Having the right nutrition and hydration is going to do amazing things for your skin and hair. It’s time to get the health back in your body and your hair. Here are some tips for eating health in order to help grow thick, healthy, shiny hair no matter how old you are.

Eat lots of protein

Eating more protein is a great way to start. The protein is going to help make your hair much from pliable and strong. Majority of women out there are not getting the amount of protein they should be getting each day, which is about 37 to 50 grams. Not getting the protein you need could result in your hair becoming limp and even thinning out a lot. By eating your right amount of protein, you could bring back the thicker, shine and stronger hair you’ve been wishing that you had. If possible add soy, nuts, low-fat dairy, fish and eggs to your diet. If you’re a big meat eater, stick to lean meats.

Go ahead and eat a rainbow

Increase the amount of antioxidants you take. They will help protect your hair and keep it nice and healthy. It will also protect your hair when you’re going through normal hormone changes our body experiences as we get older.

Try and eat at least a serving from each of the four colors found on a rainbow. For instance, for the color red you can eat strawberries, pomegranates, watermelon and tomatoes or even peppers.  For orange you have oranges, cantaloupe, peaches, sweet potatoes, orange peppers and pumpkins. With the color green, try asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, grapes, kiwi, green beans and spinach.

Health Tips For Teenagers

We all remember what it was like being a teenager. The crazy, hectic schedules we had of work, school, sports and hanging out with friends. We have long school days, after-school activities, time with friends, going out with the boyfriend or girlfriend, work and spending quality time with the family. Does just thinking about doing all these things make you exhausted? It’s a lot to do for people at such a young age.

It’s important to start off each morning with a breakfast. You’re in a hurry and on the run in the morning so be sure to at least grab something remotely healthy to eat. You can always eat some fruit or bagels on the bus ride or while walking to school.

Bring healthy snacks to schools. You need your energy and eating garbage isn’t exactly going to give you the energy to get you through the day. It’s always recommended to bring some pretzels, dried frits or unbuttered popcorn with you. Drink lots and lots of water. Try and bring a bottle of water to class every day.

While it might be a little difficult when you’re a teenager, but it’s important to try and get seven to nine hours of sleep each night. If you’re too tired, you’re metabolism is going to end up slowing down, which will result in gaining weight. You’ll end up having a hard time concentrating in school and you’re grades will suffer. It’s not worth it if you’re planning on going to college after high school. Bad grades won’t get you there.

You’re sitting down a lot and carrying around a heavy school bag. Many will recommend trying to stretch your back, neck and legs in between classes. This will help you body stay flexible and hopefully remove any aches and pains you might be feeling.

Eating a well-balanced diet will always be recommended. There’s a lot of pressure to stay thin and starvation will not get you there. Neither will fad diets. Working out and eating healthy diets is the best way to keep your body at a healthy weight.

Understanding Cataracts

A cataract is a condition of the eye in which vision becomes impaired when proteins in the lens clump together and do not let light pass through correctly. Most cataracts occur during later years as the eyes age, although there are other types that can occur at any age.

Certain types of radiation can also cause cataracts. Eye injury and eye surgery for other issues can also cause cataracts to form. In some cases, cataracts are congenital and are then present in infants at birth or can develop during childhood. Some things such as diabetes and smoking are suspected of raising one’s risk of developing cataracts.

Symptoms of cataracts can vary between individuals. Many experience blurriness from the protein clumps. This happens over time and may not be noticeable at first. In other cases, the lens slowly discolors which can add a tint to one’s vision that can make color distinctions difficult, especially between blues and purples. Other symptoms that are sometimes experienced are poor night vision, double vision, faded colors and sensitivity to the glare of night traffic or sunlight.

The surgery to remove cataracts is very common. There are two types of cataract surgery. One is phacoemulsification, usually called simply phaco. This procedure entails making a small cut on the side of the cornea and inserting a tiny device that emits ultrasound waves to break up the lens which is then removed with suction. This method is used the most. The second method is called extracapsular surgery which uses a longer cut to facilitate removing the lens in one piece. In both procedures the lens is replaced by an artificial lens in most patients. If both eyes have cataracts, the procedure will be done on one eye at a time.

While no surgery is risk free, cataract surgery rarely has complications and nearly always leaves the patient with improved vision.

Understanding Parkinson’s

Although Parkinson’s at its later stages results in severe impairment, it is a disease that progresses very slowly in most patients, often taking more than 20 years before symptoms are completely debilitating. It is not yet known exactly what causes this degenerative neurological disorder, although environmental factors are suspected along with some possible genetic links. Pesticides and other chemicals in our environment are highly suspect.

Although most Parkinson’s begins in the 60’s or older, it also occurs in those younger. Most people have heard of the disease due to the efforts of Michael J. Fox who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1991 at just 30 years of age. He has become an activist for research, founding the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in 2000 which thus far as funded more than $224 million in research. Information about this organization can be found online at www.michaeljfox.org.

Parkinson’s has afflicted many famous people – Adolf Hitler, Muhammad Ali, Billy Graham, Janet Reno, Michael Kinsley, Pope John Paul II and Vincent Price just to name a few.

There are a variety of drugs that are used for treating Parkinson’s although they are only for symptom relief. Much research is being done, however, to hopefully one day find neuroprotective and neuroregenerative treatments that can stop the progressive loss of function of the nervous system and perhaps repair the damage that already occurred. The symptom-relief drugs currently being used fall into the following categories:

  • Dopamine Replacement
  • Dopamine Agonists
  • MAO-inhibitors
  • COMT-inhibitors

Patients can also benefit from speech therapy, exercise/physical therapy, psychological therapy, and occupational therapy. Surgical treatments such as deep brain stimulation (DBS), pallidotomies and thalamotomies are helpful for some but the level of risk involved in brain surgery keeps most from going this route.

With many minds working on Parkinson’s research, a cure may someday be found. Until then, therapies are able to at least improve quality of life.
